I love being a teacher. It is a passion I have found within myself. I love teaching new concpets to kids and watching the light turn on inside of them as they grasp and begin to understand the new concept. It is a great feeling! I'm enjoying my experience in Vegas and feel I am really being prepared to be a "real" teacher come August 17th! One thing that is so fun about being a teacher is that kids say the darnest things and are so funny. Here are three recent stories of mine.
Story #1: It is really hot in Vegas, but it can get windy, too. I love to wear skirts to school to feel the breeze. One day I wore a skirt, and as the day went on, the winds picked up. I was outside brining in my class from recess. I was standing on the side of them, talking to them as a class before we entered the building. As all eyes were on my and I was talking, a big gust of wind blew and my skirt went flying up! I quickly straightened it out. A little girl raised her hand and asked, "Miss Curtis, are you wearing shorts?" I smiled and quickly said, "Yes, I am." She then preceeded to ask, "Why?" I told her I wore shorts just for ocassions like this, when the wind blows my skirt up. She replied, "That's a good idea, Miss Curtis." Needless to say, they were not "shorts." :)
Story #2: I was sick this past week, with a cough and stuffed up nose. I'm one that hates to blow my nose infront of people. It was Monday and I was reading a story to my class. I could hear myself sounding sick and like I needed to blow my nose, but I decided I would wait until I finished the story and the kids were working at their desk. In the middle of the story, a little boy raised his hand and asked, "Miss Curtis, do you need a kleenex because you sound really stuffed up?" I was embarassed, yes. I replied, "No, but thank you. I'll blow my nose after the story." I thought that was that, but he said, "Are you sure, because you sound like you should blow your nose." I smiled and told him thank you, but that we were almost done and I would then blow my nose. Now I thought that was the end of it, but later that afternooon when I was picking up the class from lunch, every single student came up to me later and said, "Miss Curtis, you sound so much better. Did you blow your nose?" Oh, I just had to smile!
Story #3: I was walking my class to an assembley and as we were walking, a little boy raised his hand. I walked over to him to ask him what was wrong. I just looked at him and could tell he was going to be sick. He was facing me and was about to tell me something, when I nicely gestured for him to face forward and I would send him to the nurse. Just as he was turning to face forward, it all came out - he threw up everywhere. He just missed me, but got the little boy infront of him all on the back! It was hilarious, but sad. He looked so sick. I sent them both to the nurse immediately. The one boy went right home, and the other little boy got a change of clothes. I don't even want to think what I would've done if he would've thrown up on me! Yuck!
I love how each day brings something new and exciting. I love teaching and I love kids. They really have no shame of saying something. They're great!
