Future Teacher

It is so refreshing to receive compliments when teaching. I love being in the fourth grade classroom with the students, and as each day goes by I feel more confident in myself and my abilities as a teacher. Today my teacher from campus came down to Idaho Falls to observe me. I was nervous!! She grades either with excellent, competent or needs improvement. All our cooperating teachers at the school told us she is a tough grader with lots of feedback, but that it is good because she only wants to help us become better teachers. Our cooperating teachers kept telling us over and over again that Sister Kay never gives out an excellent, and that if we received a competent, that was a really good sign. They really wanted to prep us. So now I was more nervous. I spent a lot of time preparing my lesson. I was teaching about reference books and was covering books such as a dictionary, thesaurus, magazines, a handbook... I had some fun activities on the white board and even wrote a little song about reference books. I knew I had this one! During my lesson I didn't feel nervous at all, but rather I felt so confident and had a blast. I love teaching! When I was talking to Sister Kay later about my lesson, she congratulated me on a job well done. When I got my observation sheet back from her, I noticed I received an EXCELLENT!! I was shocked. She quickly told me that she never gives out excellents, but that I deserved it. I felt so proud and so excited. And she gave two great tips to work on during my teaching - be careful about using "okay" and "you guys" and to make sure I really pay attention to the students and make sure they are all on task. I thought I could handle that. I've been so happy ever since. I think, no, I KNOW I'm going to be a great teacher and am so excited for my own classroom! And I've decided I like the older grades - 4th & 5th. So I'm feeling really good right now.
